Every once in a while there is a software update released from the vendor. Despite the fact that there is extensive functinal test of all components before the production relese, there are some isseus that appear only after the car is in production. This software update addresses such issues found once the car is already in production. Sometimes the update even add new fungtionality as it was with K0821 that addess the Google Earth map option. Bellow you can find a step-by-step manual how to update your RNS850 to the latests version.

Prerequisites
You will need high quality SD Class 10 for faster (and safer) file operations. The separate firmware upgrades are bellow 2GB in size but the map is bigger hence the 32GB SD. If your card is bigger than 32GB then follow the steps described in this manual to make it compatible with the RNS850.
Prepare SD card with the firmware
Format the card with FAT32 file system and then copy the files from the first software update. The card should look similar to this:
Important: Do not remove the SD card with the firmware from the MMI during the update
Updating the firmware
Open “Engineering Menu” pressing the SETUP button and immediately after that the PHONE button.
Hold both buttons pressed for a few seconds, the RNS850 will enter in update mode.
Insert the SD card with the firmware in slot 1 Press the “Update” option using the touch screen. Select the source in the menu (SD 1).
Choose the firmware pressing the big knob once
Select “Standard”
You will see a list with all categories that firmware will update
Tap on “Start download“
Confirm and Start the software update
RNS 850 will shuts down and restarts. Installation takes 10 to 50 minutes. At the end comes a few reboots.
After several minutes/hours (it depends that what it has to update and the speed of your SD) the firmware update will be done. Ensure that all components have OK status and not NOK. If there is component with NOK status, retry the update! If all is OK then press “Next“

After the reboot the RNS 850 update is completed.
Update the MAP or your RNS850
Format your SD in FAT32.
Copy the root of your map in the SD (like picture below)
Open “Engineering Menu” pressing the SETUP button and immediately after that the PHONE button. Hold both buttons pressed for a few seconds.
Insert the SD card with the firmware in slot 1 Press the “Update” option using the touch screen.
Set the source in the menu to SD card 1.
Select the map (In your case the version will different)
Choose “Standard“
Press “Start download“
Press right button “Start“
RNS 850 will shuts down and restarts. Installation takes up to 2 hours. At the end comes a few reboots.
Ensure that all components have OK status and not NOK. If there is component with NOK status, retry the update! If all is OK then press “Next”

Activate the MAP
Format your SD in FAT32.
Copy the root of your activation in the SD (like picture below)
Wait until all options are ok (no options in gray) even when all options are ok wait a minute more. K0821 firmware or newer and maps must already be installed.
- Put the files to the root of an SD card
- Turn ignition on, start Multimedia, wait 2 minutes until it’s fully loaded
- Insert SD card into slot 1
- Wait for 3 minutes until Multimedia unit restarts itself
*** if nothing happens, eject SD and re-insert it again *** - Eject SD card and enjoy your activated maps!
